BA Media Studies

In the media-saturated world of the twenty-first century, wars are won and lost on television, celebrities seem more familiar to us than our neighbours, the global economy is increasingly based on the exchange of information, and communities and identities are centred upon our interests in popular culture.

Our Media Studies programme explores these processes of mass communication, building your analytical and investigative skills, enhancing your media literacy and providing key creative and technical media production skills.

The degree provides a critical analysis of contemporary media – from television, radio and print media to mobile communications and the internet – and interrogates their social, cultural and political significance. You will also have the chance to develop hands-on skills in journalism, audiovisual production, documentary-making and advertising.

We will enhance your media literacy and develop your skills in the analysis of media texts, technologies, institutions and audiences, as well as offering key creative and technical skills for working with modern mass media. The programme builds a broad knowledge and skills base that equips our students for careers as reflective practitioners in the media and cultural industries and in a range of other spheres.

Our mixture of core, optional and practical modules enables you to choose from a wide range that matches your interests, and allows you to specialise in areas of media analysis and production that hold particular interest for you.

As a Media Studies student at Surrey you will benefit from a wide range of teaching formats, including lectures, small group tutorials and practical workshops, and from an open and creative environment for debate and independent study.
